Wearable/Portable Architecture
A WORKSHOP BY MARY MATTINGLY
1-5pm, Saturday, October 13 and Sunday, October 14, 2012
Green Papaya Art Projects
41B T.Gener St., Kamuning, Quezon City
How can we respond to the current disasters of our environment and inquire if portable architecture/design can be applicable within our urban landscape?
We've had significant and surprising response from a diverse range of groups that has been participating since last week!
Paulo Alacazren (Of BluPrint Magazine), environmentalist and UP Mountaineer Ross Arayata, NDRRMC (Workshop 1), Best teacher awardee (for Quezon City) from QC High School Rose Perez joined in, artists Marc Gaba, Mica Cabildo, Marika Constantino, Shireen Seno and Christina Quisumbing Ramilo are involved, as well as Architecture students from UP and UST, Fine arts students, Art Teachers, and High School students from QC High School, Infanta Quezon (Province) National High School and Philippine Science High School - participating and building a design for (Workshop 2).
The third phase will happen on Saturday, October 13 (Building from 1pm-5pm at green papaya). And an intervention on Sunday, October 14 wherein the participants will link all 20 individual portable design creating one sphere (which can be attached to small solar panels) so that it can be a charging source. This sphere will be parked at QC High School in Scout Ybardolaza rolling its way from 1pm -3pm on Sunday. It will stay at QC High School until 12 noon of Monday, October 15.
Attendance to the workshops is limited to official participants. Observers are welcome on a pre-arranged basis.
An exhibition/reception on October 24, Wednesday 6pm will be free and open to the public presenting the documentation and process of the workshops and interventions.

Workshop 1: Saturday, October 6: Describing the workshop
PORTABLE SPACES
Consider incorporating design that elevates your living unit
Elevated "Cocoon"
Super Adobe: It's possible to create sandbags from
your unit for building homes or stopping water.
Like the spheres we will be creating,
consider a unit that unfurls when it rains.
A tent/backpack.
A jacket/bag.
A poncho/sleeping bag.
Building
for our own needs: If
we start with what we know we need, we can usually
reach a need that is universal.
A portable boat?
Waterpod
Flock House
Malong
Vinta Sails
Water Systems
Tarps and Rope
Tarpoline
PREEXISTING MATERIALS
Our substructure.
COLOR

Symbolic Color
Pattern and Color (Subverting Royal Colors)
Josef Albers and color: Like Albers, some of our parameters
involve not mixing color, so we have to design with "flat" colors.
Albers "Homage to the Square" (Different tonalities of yellow and orange.)
Questions about site:
What features do we want our site to have?
(trees or buildings to hang our structure from so it looks
like it’s floating, open space or many obstacles?)
Where were migratory spaces within the city
that have since changed use?
What memories should our site evoke?
Where are sites of sanctuary in the city?
Additional questions:
What
are our human needs?
What
do we want to be able to carry with us?
What
problems could the wearable nature of these structures provide solutions for?
What
is sustainability when it comes to design, architecture, and even art?
What
is the life-cycle for the things we will build?
Where
could this project eventually go?
